The Health for Teens website was soft launched in 2015, alongside its accompanying website, Health for Kids!. As part of Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust‘s Healthy Child Programme (called “Healthy Together”), the website has since been ‘re-launched’ with regional-specific information by several NHS Foundation Trust organizations in England.
The goal of Health for Teens is to provide secondary school-aged adolescents aged from 11 to 19 with information on “everything you want to know about health, relationships, feelings, lifestyle and growing up”. The website achieves this by providing bite-sized information on a range of health issues, including alcohol and drugs, anxiety, body image, contraception, puberty, nutrition, sexuality, stress management, relationship advice, and more.
The website combines interactive audio, imagery, games, videos and quizzes to increase website engagement and retention. Additionally the website contains regional-specific contact information allowing users to confidentially contact local school nurses and other adolescent health services. This includes the secure text messaging ‘ChatHealth‘ service which allows adolescents and their parents to discreetly contact local health professionals. Regional versions of the website are currently available in Brighton & Hove, Coventry, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, Nottinghamshire, Plymouth, Sandwell, Shropshire, Solihull, Staffordshire & Stoke, Rutland, and Walsall counties.
Health for Teens also incorporates a range of mobile-friendly accessibility features, making use of text-to-speech, large visible text, bold colours, and a security “get me out of here” feature which allows users to quickly exit the website.
Since 2020, the website has been frequently updated with vital information in relation to COVID-19 transmission, safety and mental health issues.
“These digital resources have become a vital tool for sharing important health messages with children, young people, and families when face-to-face contacts have been restricted. In such unprecedented circumstances, we’ve maintained and developed user-friendly trusted and evidence-based web content, to support our local community in staying safe. There’s been a continual development of new content to reflect the changing needs of the population during this period.”
