PrEP4Youth

PrEP4Youth was a national South African campaign that featured five videos promoting the use of HIV prevention medication pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among young people.

Background

PrEP4Youth launched in July 2019 with the goal of creating awareness about PrEP as well as promote “pride and power in relation to HIV prevention” among young people in South Africa. The campaign followed South Africa’s approval of PrEP in 2017.

The campaign includes five full-production videos on the topics of HIV testing, combination prevention, PrEP side effects, PrEP stigma, and PrEP adherence. The videos features nationally recognized actresses from the MTV Shuga: Down South series, and combined positive dialogue with colorful imagery and effects.

The videos were syndicated across multiple social media platforms through multiple accounts, including popular radio station Vuma FM, South Africa Department of Health’s “My PrEP” campaign channels, and through Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI).

PrEP4Youth was implemented by the Options Consortium in partnership withthe South African National Department of Health, which received funding through USAID and PEPFAR. Video production and distribution included resources from WITS RHI and MTV Shuga.

Hi Arielle. Very sorry you had to go through such a terrible experience. Just know that you are not alone and support is available. Please make sure you reach out for support through your family and friends, your local police, or support organizations such as Rape Crisis in South Africa or Mirabel Centre in Nigeria.
