Take a Step

Take A Step is a youth-designed campaign aiming to promote mental health and reduce youth suicide among young Indigenous Australians.

Background

Launched in August 2021 in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members from across Australia, Take A Step encourages young people in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to recognize when and how they can access mental health support. The campaign’s primary landing page provides a number of resources to help Indigenous youth identify and strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing.  The campaign will also feature a number of national TV, radio and cinema advertisements.

Take A Step draws heavily on ideas and images from traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, including connections to spirit, ancestors, culture and country.

The campaign was developed by headspace – the National Youthl health Foundation – and five young Aboriginal people. Take A Step took inspiration and learnings from Yarn Safe, the first youth-led national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health campaign launched by headspace in 2015.

“Take a Step will help young Indigenous Australians recognize and overcome mental health challenges. It has been designed by young Indigenous Australians for young Indigenous Australians – that’s why this campaign is so important.”
